Data on this site was obtained from the Newark Police by The Star-Ledger newspaper. The police provided a raw feed of all major crime incidents in categories counted by the police in their Uniform Crime Reporting program. While this covers most major crime in the city, it excludes drug offenses and other incidents which have a major quality-of-life impact but are not included in the city's official crime rate.
All incidents were mapped based on the address provided by police -- incidents with unintelligible address information are not included on this site.
Information on sexual assaults was withheld from this feature to protect the privacy of sexual assault victims.
