This summer marks the 40th anniversary of the Newark riots, and the Star-Ledger is planning extensive coverage of the history and legacy of those tumultuous days.

One way to measure Newark then and now is through the U.S. Census. Thanks to researchers at the University of Minnesota Population Center, the body of Census data available electronically has expanded greatly. On this page, you will be able to explore for yourself how Newark has changed through a series of interactive maps.

Each map will be color coded for the category you select, based on data from five decades -- 1960,1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000. You can move around the map using controls on the top left, or by clicking and dragging, and can click on the map to get the numbers for a specific neighborhood. The categories available represent a broad array of topics and were selected because the data was comparable for each year. All dollar values have been converted to 2007 dollars.

To begin, choose a category from the menu on the right.
